Singapore, 18 December 2024 - ST Engineering today announced that its Urban Solutions business had won contracts worth about $180m in September 2024 to provide its latest communications system, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and AGIL® Platform Screen Door (PSD) solution for the new 35.9-kilometre MRT Orange Line in Bangkok. The contracted scopes of work have commenced and will be completed by July 2030.
“These projects strengthen our long-standing role in advancing Bangkok’s metro infrastructure and highlight the strong trust that the industry has in our technical and engineering capabilities. We take pride in delivering quality solutions that enable reliable, efficient and safe metro operations and enhance the commuting experience. With an experienced team of experts in Bangkok since 2014, we are fully committed to supporting Bangkok’s rail expansion programmes,” said Chew Men Leong, President of Urban Solutions, ST Engineering.
Enabling Reliable, Efficient and Safe Metro Operations
The communications and SCADA systems are integral to the smooth operations of the Orange Line. The communications system will connect various components and systems in the trains and stations, leveraging the latest networking technologies for timely data transmission to facilitate efficient operations and predictive maintenance, while the SCADA system will support real-time monitoring and control of metro operations.
ST Engineering Urban Solutions will provide over 500 sets of full-height PSDs and more than 160 sets of half-height PSDs for the 21 underground stations and seven elevated stations on the Orange Line. The PSD will serve as safety barriers between the station platform and train track, enhancing commuter safety and reducing train delays due to unauthorised track intrusions or fallen objects on the tracks.
Collectively, these solutions will enable reliable, efficient and safe metro operations and passenger service, for more seamless journeys.
ST Engineering Urban Solutions has been an active technology contributor to Bangkok’s metro networks, successfully delivering 23 smart metro projects since 2014. To date, it has deployed a range of smart metro solutions including communications systems, command, control and communications systems, passenger information systems, mobility payment solutions and PSD solutions on about 85 per cent of Bangkok’s MRT networks. The latest contracts add to ST Engineering’s growing global track record of over 200 rail projects in more than 50 cities.
The Orange Line connects eastern and western Bangkok, enhancing connectivity across the city, reducing travel times and alleviating traffic congestion. Its completion will expand public transportation options in Bangkok, potentially serving around 400,000 daily passengers when fully operational in 2030.
