From Intern to Automation Engineer

From Intern to Automation Engineer

Find out what it's like to turn an internship into a full-time role at MRAS and get firsthand advice from Jake Woodruff who spent eight months interning with us before making the transition.

Q: What was your role as an intern at MRAS, and how did the internship prepare you for your future career?

I interned as a Manufacturing Automation Engineer at MRAS.  I learnt that as the aerospace industry continues to evolve, the next generation of engineers must possess a unique set of skills to drive innovation and growth.

Q: What skills did your sponsors and mentors at MRAS believe were essential for success in the aerospace industry?

My sponsors and mentors at MRAS believe that troubleshooting and documentation skills are essential for success in this field, so the internship program is designed to cultivate these skills, providing us with hands-on experience and mentorship.

Q: What types of projects did you work on during your internship, and what technologies did you learn to use?

Initial projects for interns often involve learning new technology or processes and documenting it for future reference. I had the opportunity to learn and use new technology and processes such as automated fiber placement machines, non-contact probing and data collection systems. Technology is one of the competitive advantages of MRAS in the manufacturing complex aerostructures.

Q: Can you describe a specific project where you had to troubleshoot and solve a problem? What was the outcome?

An example that comes to mind is “hot bonder” or what is referred to as a heated blanket. We were tasked to figure out a way to even out some heating issues - those hot blankets are used in some MRO work, where they are placed over a scarf repair. We developed the skills to find solutions and document our methods for future reference, as part of our learning journey.

Q: What was the outcome of your internship experience, and did you secure a full-time role at MRAS?

I was glad to be offered a full-time role at MRAS which I accepted! I started in 2023 as a Manufacturing Automation Engineer.

Q: What advice would you offer to fellow interns looking to join the aerospace sector?

Don’t say no to challenges!
