Driving Business Growth in the U.S.

Non-linear, challenging and exciting in equal measures, Nick Jones’ career is undoubtedly a less trodden path. He served as an intelligence officer with the US Navy, completing assignments at U.S. embassies in Kuala Lumpur and Manila, and worked for organisations in aerospace, defence and energy sectors before he joined ST Engineering North America as Vice President of Strategy & Investments. 

Tell us about your role.

My role is focused on supporting our business efforts in the U.S. I do this by working with our business units in both Singapore and the U.S.  A typical day is balanced between daytime engagements with U.S. based teammates and evening calls with colleagues in Singapore. Externally, I engage with a broad range of potential customers, subject matter experts, partners, and other stakeholders.

What have been your most enjoyable experiences since joining the organisation?

Riding in the Airfish-8 Wing-in-Ground craft as part of a customer demonstration was one of my favorite moments so far. I wasn’t familiar with the WIG effect craft before joining the company. WIG craft will change the way many coastal communities travel. I can’t wait until everyone gets a chance to ride in one.

What have been your biggest learnings?

ST Engineering has a broad scope of capabilities and I've learned a lot about our products and new markets. I also didn’t realise how widespread ST Engineering's products and services were in the U.S. A few months after I joined, I started to notice Hackney trucks on the roads, LeeBoy pavers at worksites and TransCore equipment installations.

In an organisation that is big and diverse and spans many time zones, the importance of listening and asking questions has probably never been as important.

What keeps you curious and motivated?

Almost all the projects that I'm working on are long-term, so the small wins keep me motivated. I try to celebrate them, since the truly big wins rarely occur quickly.
