Redefining Maritime Transportation

Redefining Maritime Transportation

Here at ST Engineering, we continually harness technology and innovation to solve real-world problems and improve lives. To connect coastal communities in a safer, more sustainable and swifter manner, we introduced the AirFish Wing-in-Ground (WIG) craft at the Singapore Airshow 2024.

Meet Win On, who worked as Assistant Principal Engineer on the AirFish’s structural stress team. He shares more about his role in developing the innovative travel solution, which can fly at thrice the speed of conventional marine craft and is slated for certification and entry into market in 2025.

Q: Hi, Win On! How did you first get into the commercial aerospace industry?

My passion for understanding how aircraft worked led me to pursue an aerospace engineering course in college. Upon graduating, I decided to take my first step into the industry by delving into stress analysis for nacelle fan cowls.

Q: What does a typical day at work look like?

Currently, my days revolve around engineering tasks crucial to readying the AirFish-8 for commercial production. This means that I look at enhancing its structural aspects while also overseeing the analysis and repair work for the two AirFish prototypes.

Q: How does ST Engineering support the pursuit of your passion?

At ST Engineering where innovation is encouraged, I get to work in an environment with cross-functional teammates who can come from diverse disciplines. Being exposed to this unique blend of different expertise and perspectives often inspires me to think more creatively and critically. It also bolsters problem-solving capabilities, making me a better engineer as a result.

Q: What are some challenges you’ve had to overcome working on the AirFish?

Coming from an aerospace background, designing the AirFish was initially daunting due to the need to adhere to maritime regulations. We had to harmonise aircraft and marine design principles effectively to achieve our vision for the product. Fortunately, the strong camaraderie within our team made this journey significantly easier, with everyone contributing their expertise.

Q: What accomplishment are you most proud of having worked on this project?

Being able to introduce the AirFish at the Singapore Airshow is one of my proudest moments. It felt like a great milestone achievement, getting to showcase this incredible innovation after years of dedicated work and perseverance!

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to succeed in this industry?

Embrace curiosity relentlessly. Whether it's within or beyond your immediate field, maintaining an open mind and a hunger for learning broadens your horizons and equips you with the versatility needed to thrive in this dynamic field.
