With over 16 years of experience in satellite communications (satcom), Ranganayakulu a.k.a. Raja ensures seamless operations and stakeholder satisfaction as a customer success manager at ST Engineering iDirect. From upgrading global maritime networks to tackling technical challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, Raja’s expertise and commitment have helped him build strong relationships, trust and rapport with his colleagues and stakeholders.
Today, more than half of all VSAT remotes deployed on maritime vessels are manufactured by ST Engineering iDirect, and nine of the 10 largest maritime VSAT service providers rely on our platform to run their networks – a testament to the impact of Raja's work and our industry leadership.
Q: Hey Raja! What inspired you to join the satellite communications industry, and how did you get to your current role?
I was drawn to the industry because of its innovative nature and pivotal role in connectivity worldwide. I started as an engineer in India, specialising in baseband systems within satellite networks. When the opportunity to join ST Engineering iDirect arose, I relocated to Singapore for a technical support role. Over the years, I have transitioned into a customer-facing role. Now, I work closely with global clients to ensure satisfaction and success with our products and services.
Q: How do you collaborate with ST Engineering iDirect colleagues in the U.S.?
We collaborate through our 24x7x365 Technical Assistance Center, ensuring continuous customer support. We coordinate reported issues across time zones for uninterrupted service, work closely with engineering teams in Singapore and the U.S. to address the issues promptly. At our weekly managerial meetings, we focus on resolving any major challenges, reinforcing continuous improvement and maintaining a customer-focused approach.
Q: Tell us more about the projects you’ve been involved in.
I have been involved in several projects utilising Evolution®, an IP-based satellite communications system that provides high-quality broadband connectivity. One notable project was upgrading a global maritime network in Hong Kong, which serviced about 25,000 remote terminals for container ships, oil tankers, and cruise ships. This large-scale deployment required rigorous testing and preparation. A key challenge was ensuring the compatibility of remote software versions during the transition phase. I conducted comprehensive lab tests simulating the customer's environments and performed end-to-end traffic tests of the new software versions, paving the way for a successful network upgrade.
During COVID-19, when the satcom industry faced a global shortage of semiconductor chips, I worked closely with our software engineering team to provide an interim software fix, enhancing throughput with existing hardware. This helped prevent potential revenue loss and reinforced confidence in our products.
Combining my technical expertise, people management abilities, and communication skills, I am proud to deliver tangible solutions and positively impact connectivity across various industries.

Q: What is your work culture like?
My team fosters a culture of success built on three foundational pillars: unity, innovation, and discipline. Each pillar is championed by a dedicated team member who promotes initiatives to strengthen the team and enhance performance. In this aspect, I introduced a quarterly peer recognition program, encouraging team members to acknowledge and appreciate one another’s efforts and contributions. The positive feedback received has helped cultivate an environment of mutual respect and appreciation, building stronger rapport and unity within the team. Q: How do you keep your passion at work?
Being part of a 24x7x365 team, teamwork and cohesion are essential for maintaining my passion. Celebrating successes, maintaining a work-life balance, and participating in team activities like weekly sports sessions and annual retreats help strengthen team bonds and foster a positive work environment, keeping my enthusiasm high.
