Enriching Experiences in Rail Communications

Meet Kwak Yujin, Engineer with the Mobility Rail team at Urban Solutions. Together with her teammates, Yujin supports the Communications Systems for the Jurong Region Line project, Singapore’s seventh MRT line, where she’s doing her part to deliver the network communications across the rail network. Learn about her work experience in South Korea and find out how she keeps up with emerging technologies.

Q: Hi Yujin! Tell us about your role.

I work on the rail network radio system which is part of the Communications System responsible for managing and connecting various systems within trains and stations. My role involves designing and deploying the radio frequency infrastructure to provide network coverage across rail premises, as well as integrating backend radio networks for audio communications between train crews, operators and maintenance personnel.

Q: Why is the Communications System critical for rail operations?

The Communications System uses the latest networking technologies to enable efficient system operations and maintenance. It includes digital trunked radio, video surveillance and travel information system of the fully-automated train system.

We have delivered this solution for various metro lines in the Asia Pacific region. In Singapore, besides the Jurong Region Line we will also implement the Communications System in the Cross Island Line, the nation’s longest fully underground line connecting major hubs.

Q: What’s your most enjoyable experience since joining the organisation?

I’d say my two months working in South Korea where I conducted offsite integrated testing for train systems, working with various stakeholders. This was at a testing facility in Osong, and I was responsible for overseeing the testing and commissioning of related infrastructure and systems, to ensure seamless integration and performance.

Leading rail communications testing there enabled me to enrich my engineering skills, broaden my perspective on collaboration, and enhance stakeholder management skills. My teammates were very supportive and provided invaluable guidance.

Q: What are some of the learning opportunities you’ve had?

I appreciate the extensive learning opportunities available across the Group, such as technology seminars and online courses. The seminars and talks by front-end researchers and field engineers often help spark new ideas!

I recently attended a seminar on Artificial Intelligence conducted by our Group Technology Office, and I learnt how Generative AI can be used to enhance efficiencies in rail communications. I also take LinkedIn Learning courses to stay updated with essential skills and enhance my work.

Q: What activities do you engage in during your leisure time?

I visit technology exhibitions and attend virtual talks related to research and enterprise technologies for urban redevelopment and smart cities. I enjoy learning about new technologies and their applications, which enhances my creativity and adaptability in problem-solving.
