“In ST Engineering, we are able to leverage expertise within the group, tapping on technologies and capabilities from the various industries to customise an integrated solution for our customers.”
- Tammie Ooi, Manager, Commercial Shipbuilding
Q: What is a career in the marine industry like?
They say 8 years is a long time and you may start feeling that 8-year itch, but to me, a career here at ST Engineering is still a breath of fresh air every day. I started my career in ST Engineering as an Engineer in the Engineering and Design Centre, EDC. I was in charge of the design and automation of control systems onboard the vessels. Now, I am a Manager in the Commercial Shipbuilding, where I am responsible for creating and submitting a detailed, costed, credible proposal, while generating revenue for the company.
Q: What do you like about working with ships?
My hobby in scuba diving sparked my interest to work in the maritime industry. At the same time, I love being in the frontline where I can see first-hand the difference and impact our business makes to our clients.
Throughout the years, vessels too, have become smarter and more sophisticated as technology advances. In ST Engineering, we are able to leverage expertise within the group, tapping on technologies and capabilities from the various industries to customise an integrated solution for our customers. With that, our Smart Maritime Autonomous Vessel makes use of artificial intelligence algorithms to enable vessels to operate autonomously, providing shipowners with solutions to meet the future of shipping.
Q: What do you enjoy most working in ST Engineering
I love that my job at ST Engineering is dynamic and gives me great exposure beyond the borders of Singapore. Through my years working here, I have picked up a range of skill sets, from the technical work earlier in my career to softer skills such as negotiation and contracting. I am also given the opportunity to travel overseas for work, participating in conferences or trade shows or meeting clients for discussions.
There is room for a lot of development and growth because ST Engineering gives employees opportunities to try different things, or go on job rotations. To me, this is important because we'll never tire of things to learn and explore!
