Our Young Engineers Programme (YEP) is a long-term community investment initiative that aims to expose and inspire interest in students towards engineering, and help build a sustainable pool of engineering talent. Leveraging on our engineering expertise, we also hope to generate awareness and passion among the community towards the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects.
The programme is a two year scholarship scheme awarded to students from Singapore junior colleges. This sum is given in full as a cash reward to our participants upon completion of the scheme. Participants are also given a one week internship at the various sectors during the first year of their scholarship. During this time, they are given the chance to work on real projects, with our engineers as mentors to discuss and involve them in solving real-life engineering issues. An example of a project was the design of a modular robot used in search and rescue operations, where the robot enabled trapped victims to communicate with rescue teams, and pinpoint the victim’s location.
Since its inception in 2012, a total of 99 students have enrolled in the programme. We have invested close to S$200,000 to date, and more than 100 employees have contributed in excess of 5,000 hours to the scheme. We believe our programme has helped shape the participants’ interest in engineering. Out of the 55 participants who have moved on to the university, 47% of them are pursuing a degree in engineering, one of whom is an ST Engineering scholar, pursuing a degree in Naval Architecture at the University of Newcastle.
